Modular Project: Bronx Community College of City University of New York
Challenge: The City University of New York needed to build a child care center on the campus of the Bronx Community College. The building would be situated on a very rocky hill within the city limits, which presented logistic difficulties for scheduling and moving both the equipment and the crew. In addition, due to the rocky hillside, demolition and rock removal would be needed, after which retaining walls would have to be constructed.
Modular Solution: Vanguard Modular Building Systems provided a proposal to design and build a 15,200 square foot, two-story child care facility. The proposal included complete architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing structural designs. In addition to the modular classrooms, the building included an elevator, a full kitchen, an assembly hall, an alarm system, and an energy management system. Permitting and approvals by various city agencies such as DEP, Building, Fire, and Health would be handled by Vanguard Modular.
Site work entailed demolition; rock removal; retaining wall construction; water, sanitary, and storm connections; a detention tank; and landscaping. The project also included a fenced playground complete with playground equipment.
